The store was founded by Dan Wedge, who had 20 years of experience in the new book business before opening Dove & Hudson. He worked in various retail bookstores and as a publisher's representative before deciding to open his own used bookstore. Dan chose Albany as the location for his store due to the presence of government workers and colleges, which he believed would provide a discerning customer base.

Dove & Hudson is described as a collaborative effort between the store's owner and its customers. The store's stock is built up by investing time to find inexpensive books, and the customers have taught the owner what to choose. The store has a unique approach to stocking books, with the owner seeking out books from other used book stores, publisher overstock sources, and charitable book sales.

The store has undergone a transition, with Joseph Nathan taking over as the new owner. Dan Wedge will continue to work at the store, and Joseph looks forward to meeting customers and helping them find the books they want to read. The store's beautiful space, designed by Dan, features wooden bookcases and a Belles Lettres section, and the owner's memory of customers' tastes is impressive.
