About this event
Join us as we welcome back Elizabeth Jakubowski from the New York State Library for a presentation and workshop on zines! Originating with sci-fi fans in the 1930s and gaining prominence in the 1970s and 80s as tools for punk, feminist and LGBTQ+ movements to share alternative ideas, zines have been key to various subcultures and activist movements, fostering DIY creativity and countercultural expression. This presentation will include an overview of zine history along with real examples of zines from the NYS Library’s Factsheet Five collection.
After the presentation, we will provide attendees with materials to create their own mini zines or comics! Registration is preferred but not required. This year's event is part of the University Libraries' Campus Collaborations fall series - Cut, Copy, & Paste: Zines are the Theme at the Library.

This fall, the University Libraries invite students to explore the creative, political and hands-on world of zines through a series of workshops, presentations and community events. Participants will learn about zine history, bookbinding, DIY publishing, creative tools and UAlbany’s growing zine community. Whether you are new to zines or already making your own, these events offer opportunities to create, share and connect with others interested in self-publishing and independent expression.
